Youth Art Month
About / Background
Youth Art Month (YAM) is a nationally recognized arts education initiative established in 1961 in the United States. Celebrated annually across the country, Youth Art Month advocates for the essential role of visual arts in a well-rounded education and highlights the creative voices of children and youth through public exhibitions and educational programming.
Orange County Youth Art Month is part of this national initiative and serves as a county-wide platform that brings together outstanding K–12 student artworks from diverse school districts throughout Orange County, California. Through an annual juried exhibition, YAM provides young artists with the opportunity to present their work in a professional public setting, fostering confidence, critical thinking, and meaningful engagement with broader audiences.
Rooted in arts education and community-based practice, Youth Art Month emphasizes creativity, cultural diversity, and student voice. The program encourages participants to explore personal identity, lived experience, and social awareness through visual art, while promoting cross-cultural dialogue and connection between students, educators, families, and the wider community.
By situating youth artwork within accessible cultural spaces, Youth Art Month aims to affirm the value of arts education, support emerging creative voices, and strengthen the relationship between art, education, and public life.

The 2025 annual Orange County Youth Art Month exhibition was hosted at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art. This county-wide, juried student art exhibition showcased selected K–12 artworks from school districts across Orange County, California. Through a formal review and selection process, the exhibition highlighted outstanding student work that demonstrated creativity, technical skill, and thoughtful engagement with personal and cultural themes.
Selected artworks from the Orange County exhibition were further advanced to participate in the Southern California (SoCal) regional-level Youth Art Month exhibition, presented at the Riverside Art Museum from March 7 to March 21, 2026. Through this multi-level exhibition structure—from county to regional presentation—Youth Art Month provides young artists with a professional and educational experience that supports artistic development, critical thinking, and meaningful community engagement through visual art.
